Dentistry is nearly a $100,000,000,000 a year business in the U.S. and over 90% of what dentists charge their patients is for work that they themselves do not do. To give you an example, dentists do not make dentures, partials, crowns, orthodontic retainers, TMJ splints and so on. They send them to a dental laboratory where they are constructed by highly skilled craftsman called dental laboratory technicians. A dentist purchases a single crown for about $35.- $85. and then charges you, the patient $500.- $800. for the same product.
