#42

This section draws together and examines the evidence presented in the preceding sections concerning the competence of persons with substantially less training than the dentist, particularly formal education, to fit and furnish complete dentures of a quality comparable to that provided by dentists. The view held overwhelmingly by the dental profession is that only dentists can competently provide denture care. In addition, the American Dental Association and Canadian and American dentists report some specific instances of inadequate care provided by denturists. On the other side is one test of the clinical competence of denturists and apparent widespread consumer satisfaction with denturists' services both in the legal market in Canada and in the illegal market in the United States. Available evidence suggests the conclusion that non-dentists can indeed provide quality care.
