One activity of the NDA has been to attempt to develop the skills of its members. Recognizing that skill in detecting diseases of the mouth may not be gained by experience, the NDA has hired a retired dentist to instruct members in oral pathology. This course has been held in three different cities around the country. In addition, NDA has attempted to develop standards of competence in the fabrication and fitting of the dentures and has begun to examine members and to certify those who successfully demonstrate the skills.
